A space designed only for women. There's so much more this space can offer; a basketball court, a badminton court. The options are endless. Why? Because women deserve that. Umayyah will be an oasis where women can lift, enjoy community sports, practice their faith, study, work, socialize, and grow.
Commercial gyms are a thing of the past. 10 TV's all in front of the treadmills with the same shows repeating. Radio music that's playing the same songs. Not one proper platform. Carpeted floors. Missing 50% of the machines that are seen in co-ed spaces (that you're paying the same price for). Machines are old. No, women don't only work lower body everyday, where's the T-Bar row? Missing prayers during winter because you're not comfortable praying in a gym. Men dropping in for maintenance but lingering more than usual. Why are women's only spaces either tucked in a much smaller room or in a grocery store? Coming in feels mostly transactional than walking into a community. This is why I've thought of creating our very own all-in-one first ever women's only gym here in Ottawa. Women shouldn't have to compromise a lot just for getting a decent lift in. Break the taboo and help Umayyah become a reality. This space will be designed by you. Think of all the things you wish your gym would have to make you feel confident, comfortable, and safe. I'd like Umayyah to be a place where I can get a lift in, practice my faith, play sports like basketball and badminton, read, and learn from one another. What about you? Absolutely. Umayyah is a space for all women of all backgrounds who value a private and supportive fitness environment.
Umayyah is an idea as of now. The goal is to gather as much interest as possible to build momentum. I am only asking for you to share this idea with your friends and family and join the journey. Umayyah is in the planning and development stages.
